What is a Registered Dietitian?

Registered dietitians (RD) are experts trained in the metabolism, physiology and biochemistry of food and nutrition. These health professionals complete a minimum of a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution, a supervised practice program of 6-12 months, and pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

In the state of Georgia, one must be licensed in order to provide nutrition counseling. A "nutritionist" is not always a licensed dietitian (LD). Be aware that anyone can call himself or herself a "nutritionist", and there is no guarantee that the information is sound and safe advice. Would you get medical advice and help from a doctor that was not licensed?
